Locked Out of Your Car? What NOT to Do

No one plans to lock themselves out of their vehicle, but it you do — you’re not alone. An estimated four million people get locked out of their cars every year. Even with transponder and smart keys becoming more common, you could still lock your keys inside the car, misplace them, or have to deal with smart key systems failing. If you run into any of these issues this year, Keyway Lock Service has some tips on what NOT to do so you can get back in your vehicle quickly and safely.

DON’T Panic

A woman leaves her keys locked in a car.

Even though car key technology has advanced over the last decade, you can still easily lock yourself out of your car.

This is easier said than done, it’s hard not to lose your cool when your day gets sidetracked by a lock out. But don’t panic. When you are already stressed, you are more likely to make bad decisions, so take a few deep breaths before dealing with the issue at hand.

DON’T Break a Window

Unless it’s truly an emergency (such as a child or pet being locked in a hot car) don’t try to break your window. It may seem like the fastest path forward, but the cost of replacing the window will probably be way more than what a reputable locksmith would charge for the lockout. Additionally, you could cause extra damage to the car and to yourself.

DON’T DIY

You may be making better choices than smashing a window, but don’t try other DIY tricks either. Inserting a wire hanger or shoelace between the window and door seal can damage your vehicle’s door mechanism, again costing more than the actual lockout.

DON’T Forget…

…You may have a spare key. This one may seem obvious but you may not be thinking clearly in the moment. If a trusted family member or friend is nearby and has access to your spare key, call them ASAP.
