Should I Rekey? Or Change My Locks?

Out of the many customer inquiries we get, one of the most frequent ones is whether it is better to rekey or change your locks.

Depending on your current lock needs, either option may work for you.

A locksmith rekeys a lock.

Rekeying a lock means that you get to keep your current lock hardware.

If you are minding your budget, then you should consider rekeying since it is less expensive. Rekeying a lock means that you keep the existing lock hardware in place, and a locksmith will disassemble the lock cylinder and replace the internal pins to match a new key. Old keys will still be able to slide in to your locks,  but they won’t turn. This is a good option when you moved into a new home or lost a key.

Replacing locks, however, can still be necessary despite it being more expensive. If your current locks are damaged (including rusty) or you want to upgrade to more high-security locks, a locksmith can help you select new lock hardware and install it for you. This is also more time intensive than rekeying.
